Talks with taste: Editing a War Time Diary: Isy’s Tagebuch

Isy Aronowitz, who had grown up in Wuppertal, was deported as an Ostjude in 1938, at the age of 25. He kept a diary from December 1940 to August 1943, recording his time spent in two labour camps, working on the construction of a motorway and in the armaments industry. The manuscript of this diary was inherited by Isy’s great-nephew, the English art historian and writer Richard Aronowitz whose mother came to England in 1939 on a Kindertransport. Richard Aronowitz incorporated elements of Isy´s diary in his novel "Five Amber Beads" (2006). Christoph Heyl, professor of British Literature and Culture (University of Duisburg-Essen), has now published an edition of the entire diary, with a preface written by Richard Aronowitz. Moderation: Dr. Bettina Hofmann
