How can valuable raw materials be kept in the cycle? How can education for sustainable development be achieved? And how can small changes in behaviour promote climate protection and health? The winning projects of the university of Wuppertal (BUW) in 2025 provide the answers to these questions. They exemplify the diversity of sustainable engagement at BUW.

“The award-winning projects impressively demonstrate how research, teaching and university activities can help to actively tackle the challenges of our time,” says Prof. Dr Rita Casale, vice-rector for Sustainable Organisational Development and Diversity. “They combine academic excellence with social responsibility and highlight the potential that lies in collaboration between committed staff, students and external stakeholders.”

The University of Wuppertal is awarding the Sustainability Prize for the second time. The aim is to raise the profile of outstanding sustainability projects, inspire members of the university community and specifically promote sustainable development at the university. The rectorate is honouring three projects for the year 2025 in the areas of research, teaching and organisation. The prize money is earmarked to fund further sustainability-oriented initiatives at the University of Wuppertal.

The selection of the projects, each awarded 2,000 euros, highlights the wide range of sustainable initiatives at the University of Wuppertal. The winning projects range from technological solutions for a resource-efficient industry, through innovative educational formats, to creative measures for a more sustainable campus life. “They all demonstrate in different ways how sustainability is being shaped at BUW – with creativity, scientific curiosity and a great deal of personal commitment. They are also excellent examples of how change can be successfully initiated through various forms of collaboration,” says Julia Schumacher, Sustainability Officer.
