Year of Science 2026
University at the Cinema: Film and discussion on (self-)surveillance
The event forms part of the Year of Science, which in 2026 will focus on the theme of ‘Medicine of the Future’. // Photo* Colourbox/#34432374
Corpus Delicti is set in the near future. In this world, the government – known as ‘Methode’ – promises a society in which health and safety are guaranteed for all. The life of scientist Mia Holl is suddenly turned upside down when her brother Moritz is accused of murder. In her fight for truth and justice, she herself becomes the hunted in a system based on the comprehensive surveillance of all citizens.
Following the film screening, Sabrina Huber will speak with students and the audience about Juli Zeh’s fictional portrayal of a future health state. What happens to a society that declares health and safety to be its paramount goal and, in doing so, sacrifices individual freedom and self-determination? The discussion will focus on the forms of (self-)surveillance depicted in Corpus Delicti and the question of which narrative devices the film uses to bring them to light.
The event is taking place as part of the project ‘Future Health under (Self-)Surveillance. Surveillance of Body and Mind in Literature and Everyday Practice’, which is one of the winning projects of the 2026 university competition. The university competition is organised annually by Wissenschaft im Dialog and funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space as part of the ‘Year of Science 2026: Medicine of the Future’.
