The aim of the international symposium is to shed light on the mutual influence of social change and individual development on the island of Ireland from 1950 to the present day through in-depth analyses of fictional and non-fictional narratives in various genres and media. The Wuppertal organisers Prof. Dr Sandra Heinen, Prof. Dr Katharina Rennhak (both English/American Studies) and Dr Loic Wright, who was a visiting professor in Wuppertal last winter semester, are expecting internationally renowned scholars from the fields of literary and cultural Irish Studies.
A special highlight of the symposium is the public reading followed by a discussion on the evening of 4 June in the SWANE Café in Elberfeld. Guest speakers will be the authors Sheila Armstrong and Michelle Gallen.
The international symposium marks the conclusion of the Irish government-funded project "Travelling Visiting Professor in Irish Studies" (Emigrant Support Programme: Irish Studies) and is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
