The University of Wuppertal (BUW) is participating in a new international research programme on global education and mental health. As part of the "Global Education & Mental Health Research Fellowship", master's and doctoral students at BUW will have the opportunity to work together with researchers and students from the USA and Taiwan on current global challenges in the field of education. The twelve-month fellowship begins in August 2026 and applications can be submitted until 30 June. A digital information event will take place on 18 June at 1 pm via Zoom. All interested parties are cordially invited.

The fellowship is funded by the Nevada Institute on Teaching & Educator Preparation (NITEP) and pursues a so-called "glocal" (global-local) approach: global issues are researched while taking local contexts into account. The aim is to support participants in developing application-oriented research skills and to sensitise them to international educational issues.

The University of Wuppertal is cooperating with the College of Education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, under the direction of Professor Dr David Gerlach (Chair of English Language Teaching). In addition, the US partner university is cooperating with the National Taiwan Normal University. The fellows work in international teams and benefit from academic exchange across three different educational contexts.

Virtual collaboration and optional on-site visits

The programme combines virtual collaboration with optional on-site visits. Participants work in small international research clusters, are continuously supported by lecturers and develop scientific work results on current topics from the fields of global education and mental health. The programme is divided into three modules with intensive weeks, guided research phases, independent teamwork and regular feedback.

"International research experience is an important part of academic education. The fellowship offers the opportunity to work on practical research questions together with students and early career researchers from different countries and to strengthen intercultural skills in the process," says Professor David Gerlach.

Research results can be recognised

Participation in the fellowship is free of charge. Upon successful completion, fellows receive a certificate. In addition, the research results obtained can be recognised in research project theses, dissertations or in the Master of Education.

Applications are open to Master of Education students at the University of Wuppertal with an interest in global education or mental health as well as doctoral students with thematically relevant research interests. The programme is to be opened up to other degree programmes from 2027.

Interested parties can send their application with a short CV and letter of motivation by 30 June 2026 to gerlach[at]uni-wuppertal.de by 30 June 2026.
