‘For a Europe of human dignity and solidarity’: poster exhibition begins at the University Library
The new exhibition at the University Library showcases findings from the project ‘Democracy Education and Strengthening Democracy in Wuppertal’. // Graphic: University Library
The posters created by Barmen Comprehensive School, Uellendahl-Katernberg Comprehensive School and Am Kothen Grammar School address the issues of discrimination, exclusion, racism and hatred. At the same time, they present positive alternatives and promote a Europe based on human dignity, solidarity and democratic participation.
“The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on Europe’s values, its future and our shared responsibility,” emphasises Smail Rapic. The professor of Practical Philosophy and Modern Philosophy at the University of Wuppertal launched the project ‘Democracy Education and Strengthening Democracy in Wuppertal’ in 2024, in which academics from the University of Wuppertal collaborate with headteachers and teachers from various schools in Wuppertal, as well as the city’s Department of Immigration and Integration, to raise awareness of democratic values and processes among young people whilst motivating them to participate actively in civil society. The current poster exhibition is one outcome of this ongoing collaboration.
Project Weeks
Alongside the exhibition, project weeks focusing on democracy education will once again be held at Barmen Comprehensive School (12–16 October) and Uelledahl-Katernberg Comprehensive School (9–13 November). The project weeks and the poster exhibition are funded by the NRW State Initiative ‘Europa-Schecks’.
The “Democracy Education” project team invites you to the exhibition opening on 22 October at 5 pm at the University Library (Gaußstraße 20, Building BZ, Level 07).
On Thursday 5 November at 6 pm, there will also be a guided tour of the exhibition with Prof Dr Smail Rapic and Parisa Gilbert-Sadafi from the Else Lasker-Schüler Comprehensive School.
No registration is required for either event.
The exhibition runs until 18 November and can be viewed during the library’s opening hours at the Grifflenberg campus: Monday to Friday from 8 am to 10 pm, Saturdays from 10 am to 10 pm and Sundays from 10 am to 7 pm.
