Health Insurance

Every student is obliged to have a german statutory or private health insurance for the enrollment. Since January 1st 2022 it is also necessary to request the electronic transmission of your current health insurance certificate or your exemption from statutory insurance (if privately insured) from the statutory health insurance company.

Since the electronic transmission of the insurance status must have already taken place at the time of enrollment at Bergische Universität Wuppertal, you should do this immediately after receiving your acceptance letter.

Thus, written insurance certificates are no longer required at the time of enrollment. The presentation of an insurance certificate from the private health insurance company or an insurance card will NOT be accepted as proof of insurance.

Health Insurance for participants in German language courses

All participants in German language courses at Bergische Universität Wuppertal must take out adequate health insurance with a private German health insurance organization before enrolling at the university.

The private health insurance certificate must be presented on enrollment. After successful completion of the German language course you can then apply for health insurance with a public health insurance organization for the duration of your degree program as explained above.

FAQ

Previously international students had to provide a health insurance certificate or a copy of the EHIC card for enrollment at Bergische Universität Wuppertal or obtain the international e-form (E 109, E 111, E 112) and present it at enrollment. From now on this certificate will be provided digitally by the health insurance companies directly to the universities.

As an applicant, contact the German statutory health insurance company of your choice and state the BUW sender number, which was provided to you with the enrollment documents on the health insurance information sheet, and tell them that you plan to study at BUW.

From now on, a written membership certificate or the insurance card (EHIC) will not be sufficient for enrollment. In any case, the digital insurance certificate from your health insurance company is required for enrollment.

Here you will find a list of all statutory health insurance companies in Germany. You can choose one freely.

Contact a statutory health insurance company in Germany of your choice with the following documents:

  • A copy of your EHIC / AT-11
  • A copy of an official identification document (identity card or passport)
  • Your address (preferably in Germany, alternatively your home address)
  • Name of the desired university (BUW) at best with the BUW sender number

The chosen health insurance company will then send a notification to the Bergische Universität Wuppertal that you fulfill the insurance obligation.

Submit a membership application to the statutory health insurance company of your choice and state that you would like to study at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal, ideally also provide the BUW sender number. As soon as your application has been processed by the health insurance company, BUW will receive an electronic corresponding notification from the health insurance company that you are insured there.

Inform your health insurance company adding your membership number that you would like to study at Bergische Universität Wuppertal. Your health insurance will then send an electronic corresponding notification to BUW.

Select a statutory health insurance company of your choice and submit the following documents to them for inspection and verification whether your private insurance is sufficient for enrollment at Bergische Universität Wuppertal:

  • A copy of your private insurance policy
  • A copy of an official identification document (identity card or passport)
  • Your address (preferably in Germany, alternatively your home address)
  • Name of the desired university (BUW) at best with the BUW sender number
  • If you originate from a non-EU country: Application for exemption (you can obtain this form from the statutory health insurance of your choice).

The statutory health insurance of your choice will inform you accordingly whether your insurance coverage is sufficient. If it is not sufficient, you will have to have statutory health insurance.

Travel insurance is not accepted for the duration of your studies in Germany, as it does not provide sufficient health insurance coverage. You will have to have statutory health insurance.

The following persons are exempt from compulsory insurance:

  • PhD students
  • Participants in a preparatory German course
  • Students from the age of 30

They must insure themselves through a private health insurance company. These would be, for example, Mawista and Provisit.
