A walk with WupperTells through the woods in Solingen
13.5 kilometres through the forests of Solingen along the River Wupper – that was our golden October day’s walk.
We took the S7 to Solingen Schaberg. After a short descent, we explored Müngsten Bridge Park, which was created in 2006 as part of the ‘Regionale’ initiative to improve the tourist infrastructure. We walked under the Müngsten Bridge, Germany’s highest railway bridge, which has linked the towns of Remscheid and Solingen since its opening in 1897 and shortened the trade route between the two towns from 44 to 8 kilometres. Alongside other large-span arch bridges in France, Italy and Portugal, the Müngsten Bridge is being put forward as a candidate for World Heritage status.
We then carried on to Unterburg for a traditional waffle feast, a custom in the Bergisches Land. The itinerary also included the two Diederichstempel viewing points in Solingen and Remscheid, both donated by the industrialist August Diederichs, who stipulated that the pavilions should be open to the public at all times of the day and throughout the year. As we travelled across the Müngsten Bridge on the S7 train, we were able to marvel at the route we’d walked from above – 100 metres above the River Wupper.
