Travel report: Strasbourg
In July 2024, the International Students Team (IST) at the University of Wuppertal went on an adventure to Strasbourg-a city that, like no other, stands for the connection between European politics and French culture. The programme offered a varied mix of institutional visits, culinary impressions, and shared experiences.
Focus on Europe
A central part of the programme was a guided tour of the Council of Europe. There, we gained exciting insights into the work of the institution, which has been committed to democracy, human rights, and the rule of law for decades. For many participants, it was impressive to visit a place where such fundamental issues for coexistence in Europe are negotiated.
Afterwards, we visited the Lieu d'Europe, an information and meeting centre dedicated to the European idea. Interactive exhibitions and vivid displays made it clear how closely Strasbourg is linked to the development of Europe.
Another highlight was the visit to the European Parliament. During a guided tour, we learnt more about the tasks and working methods of the members of parliament and were able to take a look at the impressive plenary chamber. The international students in particular were fascinated by how European politics is shaped here in concrete terms.
Cultural highlights
In addition to politics, we also had plenty of time to explore the city. During a walk through the picturesque La Petite France district, we enjoyed the half-timbered houses, small canals, and cozy alleys that give Strasbourg its special charm.
We also sampled a regional speciality together: we enjoyed Alsatian cuisine with a tarte flambée and strengthened the team spirit within the group.
Finally, a boat tour on the Ill took us past the most important sights and offered us a very special view of the city-from the modern European quarter to the historic old town.
The trip ended with an impressive experience: the light show at Strasbourg Cathedral. The colourful projections on the Gothic façade transformed the evening into an unforgettable spectacle and provided a fitting end to our trip.
Conclusion
Strasbourg proved to be a city that combines politics and culture in a unique way. The encounter with European institutions, combined with the charming impressions of the Alsatian old town and shared experiences, made the trip a highlight of the summer semester.
