Study Trip to Luxembourg/Schengen
As part of our project to promote democratic participation and European civic education, we conducted a three-day study trip to Luxembourg with a multicultural group of international students. The group consisted of participants from Spain, Portugal, India, Pakistan, China, Romania, Mexico, Panama, Iran, and Ghana. This diversity shaped the trip in a meaningful way, as students exchanged perspectives on political systems, democratic processes, and European values.
The programme focused on the European Union, its institutions, and the importance of democratic structures. In Luxembourg's EU district in Kirchberg, the group received insights into several key European institutions, including the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), the European Commission Representation in Luxembourg, the European Court of Auditors (ECA), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Investment Fund (EIF), the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), the Publications Office of the European Union, and the Translation Centre for the Bodies of the European Union (CdT).
Additional programme elements included the Europe Experience of the European Parliament, the Musée Dräi Eechelen, the Schengen Museum and the tripoint border area, as well as a guided walk through Luxembourg's historic old town and a visit to the Grand Ducal Palace.
Participants consistently reported very positive feedback. They especially highlighted their deepened understanding of the EU and its role in global political processes, an increased awareness of the importance of democratic structures and the rule of law, and the value of intercultural exchange within the group. Visiting places where European politics becomes tangible helped strengthen their connection to European values and democratic principles.
Overall, the study trip demonstrated how effective European educational work can be when it is interactive, international, and rooted in real-world experiences. The participants returned not only with new knowledge, but also with motivation and enthusiasm to further engage with Europe, its institutions, and democratic participation.
