The performance of "Nelken" by the Wuppertal Dance Theatre, choreographed by Pina Bausch, one of the world-famous choreographer’s best-known works.

Together with our international students, we attended a performance of “Nelken” by the Pina Bausch Dance Theatre in Wuppertal and experienced one of the world-famous choreographer’s best-known works. Pina Bausch shaped dance theatre like almost no other artist and turned Wuppertal into an internationally recognised centre for contemporary dance.

The piece made a profound impression with its iconic set design featuring thousands of carnations and an extraordinary blend of dance, theatre and music. Rather than following a traditional plot, ‘Nelken’ explores themes such as freedom, living together, love, fear and humanity, inviting the audience to bring their own thoughts and feelings into the performance. It was precisely this openness that made the production a special and enriching experience for many students.

Afterwards, the group’s visit to the theatre provided plenty of food for thought. The students shared their very personal impressions and, in doing so, came to understand how art, regardless of language or background, can bring people together. For many, it was their first experience of Pina Bausch’s dance theatre and a cultural highlight of their stay in Wuppertal.
