Whether you have already embarked on a doctorate or are just thinking of doing so, the CGS will be your first port of call. The following pages contain a wealth of information on doctoral studies at UW for both German and international students, from the academic profile and specialities of the various faculties and institutes to admission requirements and enrollment procedure. The doctoral degree regulations of the faculties represented at CGS are available as downloads, and we have also listed the members of the relevant examinations boards, along with the name of the person responsible for official recognition of course credits etc.
Of considerable interest for all those who have not yet clarified their financial backing are the sections on Financing your doctorate and Financing your doctorate (international students). Here you will find a list of 'gifted student support' and other relevant foundations and links to databases containing the names of funding organizations listed by subject/topic, as well as upcoming prize-winning competitions for young academics. A number of other relevant links, including doctoral study guides, round off our information service offer.
Individual advice and guidance for both current and potential doctoral students – whether on deciding and structuring your topic, on applying for a scholarship, or on deciding whether to do it at all – is available from the CGS advisory service, which is also there to help with any problems that might arise in the course of your writing and research.

For academic and artistic staff, the question of their own development opportunities arises at every stage of their career. Similarly, in line with its mission statement, the University of Wuppertal regards staff development as essential for achieving and maintaining a thriving organisational culture that also fulfils its public education and research mandate to the highest possible standard.
Situated at the interface between overarching and individual development goals, the Academic Staff Development Service acts as the first point of contact and service provider for all academic staff at the University of Wuppertal: ranging from training tutors for their first teaching placements to individual coaching sessions on voice training and body language for the professorial staff.
The Service Centre’s wide-ranging services are divided into three areas: counselling, training and coaching. Please feel free to get in touch – we will provide you with personalised advice on staff development matters, including career guidance, and, following an initial consultation, will work with you to put together your personalised programme.

Supervision and coaching form the conceptual basis for advising individuals in their professional roles and positions. Reflection is a central element of the counselling process.
Those seeking advice are supported in achieving clarity and development based on their own insights. Supervision and coaching require a willingness to engage in an open-ended counselling process.
Coaching supports the structuring and planning of an academic career path during a specific career phase. Topics covered include preparation for selection and appointment procedures, or, for example, establishing one’s own area of research following an appointment, as well as building networks.
Topics covered in the individual sessions may include, amongst others: career planning, setting professional goals and planning milestones, positioning oneself in leadership roles and committees, strategic positioning within the scientific community, strengthening one’s identity as a female scientist, and career paths for those with diverse backgrounds.
