Between collaboration and academic competition: lecture on interdisciplinarity

05.06.2026|11:30 Uhr

"Interdisciplinarity in times of academic cannibalism" is the title of the lecture by art historian Professor Dr Karen van den Berg, which she will give on 11 June as part of the educational philosophy colloquium at the University of Wuppertal (BUW). The event starts at 7.30 pm in the Pina Bausch Centre.

The Studium fundamentale has been an integral part of the degree programme at Witten/Herdecke University for more than 40 years. Since November 2025, a doctoral thesis at the Wuppertal Chair of General Educational Science has been looking at how the Witten model has developed over the past four decades and what impetus it can provide for the future. // Photo UW/H | Johannes Buldmann

Professor Dr Karen van den Berg studied art history, classical archaeology and Nordic philology in Saarbrücken and Basel. From 1993 to 2003, she worked at the University of Witten/Herdecke, where she developed projects such as "art in dialogue". From 2003 to March 2026, she held the Chair of Art Theory and Staging Practice at Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen, where she was Academic Director of the artsprogramme from 2006. She is currently an endowed professor for museum practice - theory and mediation at Ruhr University Bochum.

The lecture is also the official launch of the Wuppertal research project "History and Future of the Studium fundamentale at Witten/Herdecke University". BUW Rector Prof Dr Birgitta Wolff will give the opening address. The lecture will be followed by a discussion and a champagne reception.
