How does real equality work, Prof Jutta Allmendinger?

12.05.2025|14:45 Uhr

In Germany, equality between women and men has been legally achieved. But where do we actually stand in everyday life? Which structural conditions favour inequality and how can individuals, politics and society take countermeasures? Sociologist Jutta Allmendinger from the Humboldt University in Berlin will be asking and discussing these questions on 27 May from 6 p.m. at the Future Forum for Democracy at the University of Wuppertal. Anyone interested is cordially invited to attend. Registration is required.

About the topic

According to our constitution, equality and democracy are inextricably linked: Men and women have equal rights, as has been stated in Article 3 of our Basic Law since 1949; this was followed in 1958 by the so-called Equal Rights Act, and in 1990 the sentence "The state shall promote the actual implementation of equal rights for women and men and shall work towards the elimination of existing disadvantages" was included in the course of German reunification.

In her presentation, Jutta Allmendinger will outline what has been achieved since then and where there is still an urgent need for action. We are still on the way to fulfilling the Basic Law, but the goal is far from being achieved.

Prof. Dr h.c. Jutta Allmendinger, Ph.D. is a professor of educational sociology and labour market research at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and was head of the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB) from 2007 to 2024. She is a member of many academies and committees, including Chairwoman of the Scientific Commission of Lower Saxony (WKN) since 2024, member of the German Ethics Council and member of the Science Council.

About the Future Forum

Political polarisation, populism, disinformation: democracy is facing a variety of challenges. At the same time, our society has major tasks that require constructive cooperation in order to overcome crises and shape our future. So how can we preserve and strengthen our democracy? Once a semester, the Rectorate of the University of Wuppertal invites a top researcher to give an impulse and talk as part of the "Future Democracy Forum" event series. In November 2024, at the start of the series, Prof Dr Rainer Forst from Goethe University Frankfurt spoke about democracy and tolerance. In the summer semester, sociologist Jutta Allmendinger will address the topic of democracy and equality.
