From 3 June to 14 July 2026, the University Library of the University of Wuppertal is presenting the exhibition "The thread of memory. Spanish workers and labour culture in the North Rhine-Westphalian textile industry". The exhibition focuses on a chapter of European post-war history that has received little attention to date: the migration of thousands of Spaniards to Western Europe in the 1960s.

The exhibition focusses on the history of the first female textile workers from the province of Salamanca who came to Remscheid in 1960. It sheds light on the realities of their lives and work, their contribution to the industrial and cultural development of their new home and the ways in which these experiences are remembered.

The exhibition was curated by students from the school of humanities and cultural studies at the University of Wuppertal under the direction of Dr Carmen Pérez González.
