Science Slam Sustainability: young scientists wanted

23.06.2025|14:15 Uhr

After a successful start in 2023, the University of Wuppertal (BUW), together with the Wuppertal Institute and the Pina Bausch Centre, invites you to the "Science Slam SUSTAINABILITY Vol. 2" on 18 November 2025. For the second edition, we are still looking for young scientists who would like to present their research on the topic of sustainability on stage and inspire others.

Whether it's research into the mobility of tomorrow, the energy transition and circular economy or sustainable consumption - at the Science Slam, complex content is transformed into vivid, entertaining and lively stories. At the end of the evening, the audience chooses the best presentation.

No previous experience is explicitly required to take part. In a two-day professional workshop on 16 and 17 October 2025 with Dr Julia Offe, molecular biologist and co-founder of the Science Slam format, all participating slammers will be prepared for the stage.

Interested young scientists can apply by email to pr[at]wupperinst.org by 18 July 2025 . The following information is required: Name, section/research area (Wuppertal Institute) or School (BUW) and two to three sentences on the research topic. Six candidates will be selected to compete in front of an audience of up to 200 people to win the slam title.

What the slammers of the last Science Slam had to say

"The Science Slam was one of the coolest experiences I've had at the institute so far. At the beginning, I wasn't quite sure whether I really dared to do it - standing on a stage like that gave me a bit of respect. But I'm really glad that I did it! I particularly liked how we slammers supported each other - we gave each other tips and cheered each other on during the workshop. And what makes me really happy is that I still get invited to new slams from time to time because of the YouTube video. I can only recommend that you take part. It's worth it!"

"Taking part in the Science Slam was quite a step out of my comfort zone - but it was absolutely worth it. This format actually breaks with a lot of what you normally do in everyday research: you have to break your topics down to the essentials, simplify them, explain them in a comprehensible way and be funny at the same time. It was quite a challenge to reconcile all of this, and I had a really exciting time with the great slammers I got to know during the workshop and the preparation. Trying it out is really enriching!"
