The young people attend selected courses just like regular students. Many come from Wuppertal, whilst some come from neighbouring towns such as Remscheid or Wermelskirchen. To take part, students must have particularly good academic results.
Science and technical subjects are particularly in demand. Mathematics, computer science, chemistry and physics feature on the timetables of the student pupils this term. But other disciplines also offer the chance to get a taste of university life even before taking the A-levels: three participants, for example, have opted for philosophy courses, whilst others have chosen economics.
Studying whilst still at school
The current cohort shows that many of the participating pupils feel very much at home in the programme: four of the 14 pupils have been taking part for several semesters now.
‘Exzellent Starten’ thus offers high-achieving pupils more than just an insight into everyday university life. They can explore their academic interests in greater depth and enjoy the new learning opportunities and higher standards at university. And those who successfully complete the relevant modules can also earn their first credit points towards a future degree programme even before taking their A-levels.
The student pupils are supported by the Central Student Advisory Service (ZSB). It helps participants choose suitable modules and supports them throughout their time at the university.
“Get off to a flying start – studying before your A-levels”
Pupils can register by the end of February for the summer term and by the end of August for the winter term. The programme is aimed at particularly high-achieving pupils who wish to attend courses at the University of Wuppertal whilst still at school.
Participation in the school pupils’ study programme requires the consent of both the school and the parents. This is because some university courses take place during regular school hours. Pupils are responsible for catching up on any missed schoolwork themselves.
Further information on the ‘Exzellent starten’ programme is available on the Central Student Advisory Service’s website.
