The competition offers students of architecture, civil engineering, technical building services and related disciplines the opportunity to work on a real and forward-looking project in Wuppertal in an interdisciplinary manner. The focus is on the planning of a technical operations building at Königshöhe, at the southern portal of the suspension bridge planned as part of the Federal Garden Show. In future, the building is to serve as a barrier-free access to the bridge and at the same time impress as an architecturally appealing, energy-efficient and touristically attractive structure. The task thus combines a practical approach to sustainable urban development, circular construction and integral planning.
The Living Lab NRW, a platform for research and education at the University of Wuppertal on the topic of climate-neutral and sustainable urban construction, supports the competition teams by providing access to existing materials, research results and expert guidance. The aim is to transfer theoretical approaches from teaching and research directly into practice and to overcome the boundaries between university and application.
The competition is aimed at students from all universities in Germany. Anyone who is interested in creative teamwork, real construction tasks and sustainable solutions is invited to take part. Interdisciplinary teams are expressly encouraged to practise practical, integrated planning. Registration has been open for a few days. The teams now have time to prepare and submit their designs. The closing date for submissions is 31 March 2026. After the presentation of the concepts, the jury will select the best entries and award prizes at a festive awards ceremony with poster presentations in June 2026.

Gateway Wuppertal creates something new from what already exists
The VDI Integral Planning Competition is considered one of the most important junior formats for students of architecture, civil engineering, technical building services, facility management and related fields of study. The aim is to promote integral and interdisciplinary planning as the basis for innovative and sustainable building concepts.
In the 14th round of the competition, the theme "Gateway Wuppertal - creating something new from what already exists" focusses on the conversion of existing structures. With its combination of industrial history and creative transformation, Wuppertal offers the ideal context.
