Kunsthalle Barmen invites you to a creative workshop, a discussion with female artists and a sports day
Get creative at the ‘Family and Friends Workshop’
On Saturday 1 August, the Kunsthalle Barmen will once again be opening its creative workshop from 2 pm to 6 pm. At the open ‘Family and Friends Workshop’, children, teenagers and adults are invited to get creative – on their own, with friends or with the whole family. The theme, which changes every month, is based on the current exhibition. No booking is required – visitors can drop in at any time and leave whenever they like.
Experience the exhibition in a peaceful atmosphere
On Thursday 6 August, from 2 pm to 8 pm, the Kunsthalle will be in ‘Silent Mode’, offering a low-stimulus exhibition experience. Light, noise and other sensory stimuli will be deliberately reduced to allow visitors to engage with the exhibition in the most relaxed way possible. This event is aimed at anyone who prefers to discover art in a peaceful setting.
‘Shared Spaces’ – Artist talk with Valerie Feldhaus and Meltem Er
On Saturday 22 August at 3 pm, the Kunsthalle Barmen invites you to the ‘Shared Spaces’ discussion series with artists Valerie Feldhaus and Meltem Er. How does community become visible – in a café, on the street, or in private and public spaces? The artistic works of Valerie Feldhaus and Meltem Er explore places where everyday life, memory and a sense of belonging intertwine. During the discussion, the artists will offer insights into their working methods and talk about their artistic approaches to social spaces, about encounters and observations, and about the question of from which perspective community can be depicted.
Activity and encounters at Geschwister-Scholl-Platz
On Friday 28 August, from 3 pm to 6 pm, Geschwister-Scholl-Platz will be transformed into a space for sport, play and socialising. Together with UniSport at the University of Wuppertal, local sports clubs and other partners, the Kunsthalle Barmen is hosting an open afternoon for all age groups. Alongside various hands-on activities, the programme includes discussion sessions on the topics of sport, art and public space. The event demonstrates how community activities bring people together and strengthen social cohesion.
About the current exhibition
The exhibition “merry company” is on display at the Kunsthalle Barmen until 13 September 2026 and explores different forms of coexistence – from artistic collectives and social networks to cultural communities. Visitors are invited not only to view the art, but also to get involved and become part of collaborative processes. Full details of the current exhibition can be found here: https://uni-w.de/kwtkt
About the Kunsthalle Barmen
The Kunsthalle Barmen, which reopened in 2024 within the Haus der Jugend, is run by the University of Wuppertal and funded by the Rhineland Regional Council and the City of Wuppertal. Since its reorientation, exhibitions including ‘Shared Spaces’, ‘Fertile Structures’, ‘Do Worry Be Happy’, ‘EX NIHILO’ and, most recently, ‘effort + flow – Mathematics and Art in Dialogue’ have been staged. In close collaboration with students, cultural institutions and regional partners, new formats for cultural education and outreach are being developed.
Collaborations are in place with, amongst others, the Pina Bausch Centre, the Von der Heydt Museum, the Wuppertal Institute, Utopiastadt, and higher education institutions such as the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts, Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences and the Folkwang University of the Arts. Schools from the region are also regularly involved through outreach programmes.
