08.04.2026|08:45 Uhr

On 24 April, the motto is: Everyone into the hall - one of several preliminary tournaments for the German Volleyball University Championship starts in Wuppertal at 2 pm. The special thing about it: The women's and men's teams play at the same time and the University of Wuppertal is represented by a student team in both competitions. All the more reason to make the journey to the university hall: With the appropriate support from the stands, the two home teams want to cheer on as many points as possible. Admission is free.

The University of Wuppertal is hosting the preliminary round of the German University Volleyball Championships on 24 April. Four women's teams and four men's teams will battle it out to progress in the tournament. The venue is the university hall. In addition to the sporting competition, a small supporting programme is also being planned. The sports student council will be selling food and drinks.

Great opportunity

"We are delighted to give students and everyone from Wuppertal and the surrounding area the chance to see UniSport in action. Being able to organise the university championship for men's and women's volleyball at the same time is really something very special for us. All guests can look forward to exciting, fast and free games at a high level," invites Julia Vent, captain of the BUW women's team, to the university hall.

Benjamin Rust, captain of the men's team, adds: "It is a great pleasure for us to be able to organise the preliminary round of the tournament in Wuppertal. We are proud of this opportunity and see it as a great way to further increase enthusiasm for the sport of volleyball. We are particularly looking forward to welcoming many students to the hall - take the opportunity, come along and support us!"

Mode of play

Both tournaments are played on a "each-against-each" basis. If you want to win a game, you need two winning sets. In addition to the teams from the University of Wuppertal, the women's competition also includes the teams from Bochum, Münster and Hanover 2 as well as Marburg, Cologne and Münster in the men's competition.

The women's group winners will qualify directly for the final round, which will take place in Munich on 21 and 22 June. For the men, the group winners will go through an intermediate round to qualify for the final.

University sports centre as a unifying element

"Hosting the German University Championships is an impressive demonstration of the potential of university sports in Wuppertal - not just for competition, but as a connecting element between popular and elite sport. Especially in the context of the planned NRW Olympic bid and the upcoming referendum in Wuppertal, it is clear what role the university of Wuppertal can play as a partner university for top-class sport. We are creating the structures here on site in which talent is promoted, community is lived and sporting enthusiasm can be experienced - a strong basis for major international sporting events," emphasises Dennis Fink, Head of UniSport.
