Action day

Diversity Day at the University of Wuppertal

17.06.2026|12:00 Uhr

On 24 June, the University of Wuppertal invites you to a day of action under the motto "Queering the University - The University as a Place of Democratic Diversity" to mark the nationwide Diversity Day. The event is aimed at all members of the university - students, teaching staff and employees - and deals with issues of diversity, democracy and participation in the university context. The event will take place in the Senate Hall in Building K (K.11.07) on the Grifflenberg Campus.

The German Diversity Day is initiated annually by the Charta der Vielfalt association. The University of Wuppertal has signed the Diversity Charter 2022 and sees diversity as an integral part of its self-image. Differences should be seen as an opportunity and actively promoted through diversity-sensitive decisions. With Diversity Day, the university wants to make diversity visible, create space for dialogue and jointly develop perspectives for a discrimination-sensitive and democratic university culture.

University members are invited to take part in the various formats, engage in dialogue with each other and take away new ideas for everyday university life.

Programme overview:

10 to 11.30 a.m.: Keynote speech by Jule Govrin "Rainbow universalism. How queer movements democratise democracy",  Senate Hall in Building K (building K, floor 11, room 07)
The deputy professor of practical philosophy traces feminist emancipation struggles of queer movements and asks how these have contributed to the democratisation, liberalisation and equalisation of society. Instead of a narrow understanding of identity politics, the perspective of a "universalism from below" is adopted.

11.30 a.m. to 12.15 p.m.: Lunch snack & networking "Strong together - the queer BUW network", Senate Hall in Building K (building K, floor 11, room 07)
The focus is on the founding of a cross-status network of queer employees at the University of Wuppertal. The open exchange offers space for networking, brainstorming and shared perspectives.

12.15 to 14.15: Workshop "How diverse is our university really? Rethinking democracy, participation and the university", Senate Hall in Building K (building K, floor 11, room 07)
Participants will discuss issues of belonging, exclusion and anti-discrimination in everyday university life. The focus will be on how diversity, participation and democratic university development can be strengthened. The aim is to develop concrete perspectives for a discrimination-sensitive and democratic university.

2.30 to 3 p.m.: Opening of the exhibition "Respect and appreciation on campus", foyer bulding K
Works by design students at the University of Wuppertal on the topics of respect, discrimination, cohesion and university culture will be on display. The communication campaigns developed provide impulses for an appreciative everyday university life and invite reflection, exchange and observation. The exhibition will be on display in the foyer of Building K from 24 June to 22 July 2026.

The event is organised by the equal opportunities and diversity unit and the anti-discrimination office of the University of Wuppertal.
