The power of chance in football: expert Christoph Biermann visits the University of Wuppertal

09.06.2026|08:50 Uhr

Journalist and football expert Christoph Biermann will be coming to the University of Wuppertal on Tuesday, 16 June. The author, who writes for the magazine "11Freunde" among others, will be a guest in the lecture "The Culture of Football" by literary scholar Prof Dr Matías Martínez. In his lecture, Biermann embarks on a search for coincidence in football - he reports on conversations with coaches, managers, club owners and mathematicians and the astonishing things he has discovered in the process. The lecture starts at 2.15 pm in lecture hall 26 (Grifflenberg campus, building I, level 13, room 65). All interested parties are cordially invited. Admission is free.

The table doesn't lie? Biermann shows, among other things, how top clubs try to minimise chance through mathematical calculations - and why the game is never completely predictable. The lecture will be followed by a discussion with host Matías Martínez, in which the audience will also be involved. Questions and contributions for a lively exchange are therefore welcome.

Christoph Biermann has worked for taz, Stern, Die Zeit and was an editor at Süddeutsche Zeitung and Der Spiegel. He has been working for the football magazine 11Freunde since 2010, now as a reporter. Biermann has been one of the most prominent football journalists in Germany for many years and has published numerous books on the subject of football. His most recent book was "Die Tabelle lügt immer. On the power of chance in football".
