In light of social polarisation and anti-democratic trends, education for democracy is becoming increasingly important. Schools have a particular role to play in this regard: they are places of exchange, participation and social learning. Against this backdrop, the university of Wuppertal and the City of Wuppertal’s Municipal Integration Centre will be presenting various projects and initiatives on democracy education at a digital information event on 6 July from 2.30 pm to 5 pm.

The event will be opened by Rector Prof. Dr Birgitta Wolff and Annette Berg, Wuppertal’s Head of Social Affairs and Integration. The focus will be on projects that promote democratic participation, facilitate dialogue and empower young people to play an active role in shaping their communities.

Insights into projects and research

Amongst other things, the previously unpublished second edition of the local authority’s professional development programme ‘STRENGTHENING SCHOOLS: Shaping Diversity, Promoting Democracy’ for the 2026/27 school year, the ‘Democracy Education in Wuppertal’ project with project weeks and project days for secondary schools, and current research projects on democracy education in primary schools. In addition, participants will gain insights into the international cooperation project SESAME, which develops strategies to prevent radicalisation and extremism among pupils.

The event is aimed at teachers and pupil representatives from all types of schools and, in addition to the project presentations, offers opportunities for discussion and networking.
