Biography

Birgitta Wolff studied economics and philosophy at the University of Witten/Herdecke after completing a banking apprenticeship. After graduating, she completed her doctorate at the Faculty of Business Administration at Munich's Ludwig Maximilian University. Following her habilitation in 1999, she was a J. F. Kennedy Fellow at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University, a visiting professor at the Center for European Studies at Georgetown University and a professor of business administration and international management at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. Other guest professorships have taken her to Eastern Europe, South America and China. She spent a research semester at Stanford University.

From 2010 to 2011, Birgitta Wolff was Minister of Culture and from 2011 to 2013 Minister of Science and Economic Affairs of Saxony-Anhalt. From 2015 to 2020, she held the office of President of Goethe University Frankfurt. She served as Vice President for Research, Young Academics, Transfer and Cooperation at the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) for two years until 2020. She serves on various committees, including as Chair of the Administrative Board of the Essen-based RWI - Leibniz Institute for Economic Research, as well as Spokesperson of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, Leibniz Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity Research; she is also a member of the Advisory Board of the EU Cooperation Office of the Science Organisations (KoWi), the Board of Trustees of the Volkswagen Foundation, the Supervisory Board of the Federal Agency for Springboard Innovations (SPRIND) and the Administrative Board of ZDF.

Birgitta Wolff has been rector of the University of Wuppertal since 1 September 2022.
