The discipline of safety engineering is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Following the founding of the University of Wuppertal (BUW) in 1972, then still a comprehensive university, the subject of safety engineering was established there in 1975 - with a degree programme that is unique in Germany.

Safety engineering is an engineering discipline with an interdisciplinary and application-orientated concept. The main focus is on the knowledge-based development and application of methods that serve to analyse and avoid hazards and minimise remaining hazards for people and the environment, particularly in connection with technically complex products, systems and processes.

This includes the teaching and research areas of plant and product safety, substance and material safety, occupational safety, environmental safety, traffic safety, technical reliability, energy efficiency, consumer protection, civil protection and disaster control, fire and explosion protection as well as safety and quality law.

Wuppertal Security Day 2025

The anniversary celebrations will take place on the occasion of the Wuppertal Safety Day 2025 on 18 September. Prof Dr Ralf Pieper (BUW), Prof Dr Stefan Bracke (BUW) and Bernhard Piotrowski-Bölt (VDSI - German Association for Safety, Health and Environmental Protection at Work) are hosting a hybrid conference as part of the 14th Safety Science Forum and the 17th VDSI Forum NRW. The full-day conference programme includes presentations followed by discussions on various topics: These include the focal points of safety engineering Technical Reliability and Safety, Product Development and Materials Science, Fire Protection, Occupational Science and Society and Safety.
