Look, understand and initiate change together: With Malala Day in Wuppertal, the University of Wuppertal and the Katholisches Bildungswerk have been setting an example for more educational justice in the Global South for five years. On Friday, 11 July, the organisation team invites you to the anniversary event at Laurentiusstraße 7 (Wuppertal) from 10 am to 5 pm. Participation is also possible online via Zoom.

This year's programme includes the paths of Togolese women into academic professions and the associated challenges, educational activism in Benin and comparative insights into the education systems of Cameroon, Pakistan and Argentina. Discussion rounds, poster exhibitions and the presentation of projects that work in different ways for more educational justice complete the programme.

The Wuppertal Malala Day has been focussing on issues relating to gender and education for five years now and examines these from various perspectives for different regional focuses in the Global South: Scientists and activists from different countries and disciplines will be guests.

The main aim is to talk to each other and learn from each other. "Enabling the right to education and educational opportunities are issues that concern us all. Education is the key to a sustainable and successful future," explains organiser Dr Laura Wiemer from the Department of Romance Studies at the University of Wuppertal. That is why the public is expressly invited to join in the discussion at the event venue in the centre of the city. "We want to look together to understand what solutions can bring about positive change for people for whom access to education is not a matter of course."

The full programme can be viewed on the website for the 5th Wuppertal Malala Day. The Zoom link to the live broadcast on 11 July can also be found there. Anyone who would like to attend the event in Wuppertal at the Katholisches Bildungswerk, Laurentiusstraße 7, can come along without prior registration. Participation is free of charge.

More background on the namesake and the Wuppertal Malala Day

Malala Yousafzai became famous after she survived a Taliban assassination attempt as a schoolgirl. The reason for the attack was that she was campaigning for girls to be allowed to go to school in her home country of Pakistan. She was honoured with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 for her commitment. Her birthday, 12 July, was declared Malala Day by the United Nations in 2013. Yousafzai has been a United Nations Messenger of Peace since 2017.

In keeping with the day of action, which aims to encourage people around the world to support Malala's cause, Malala Day has been organised in Wuppertal by the University of Wuppertal in cooperation with the Katholisches Bildungswerk since 2021 - this year, for organisational reasons, one day earlier, on 11 July.
