Wuppertal chemist Felix Strieth-Kalthoff, Junior Professor of Digital Chemistry at the University of Wuppertal, has been honoured with second place in the academics Young Scientist Award 2025. The prestigious prize has been recognising outstanding research achievements by young scientists and their commitment to science since 2007.

Strieth-Kalthoff develops AI-supported tools for chemical research that help to significantly accelerate processes in synthetic chemistry laboratories. His work is at the interface between artificial intelligence and laboratory practice.

"We are investigating how we need to expand existing AI algorithms in order to be able to use them effectively in the laboratory - and how everyday laboratory work can be adapted so that the resulting data can be utilised optimally," explains the scientist. This interdisciplinary approach helps to make chemical research and development processes more efficient and sustainable. He is also actively involved in promoting the next generation of chemists, particularly in the area of chemistry competitions for school pupils.

The 32-year-old studied chemistry at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster, where he received his doctorate in 2021. He then conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Toronto in Canada before moving to the University of Wuppertal in 2024.

The award ceremony will take place on 23 March 2026 as part of the German Science Gala of the German University Association in Berlin.
