Dr Isabella Kappner (3rd from left), Lena Tarrach (4th from left) and Melike Konerding Karasu (2nd from right) ensure that women in physics are more visible. They have now been honoured with the University's Gender Equality Award. Making female physicists more visible and thus countering the stereotype that physics is a male domain - that is the aim of the "Female Physicist of the Month" project. The format regularly introduces female students and scientists and thus creates inspiring role models for young women interested in studying and young female scientists.
The project uses various examples to show how women make their way in physics. "It is particularly impressive due to the high level of initiative shown by the women involved and the ease with which it can be transferred to other subjects," said the jury.
The selection of the project for the University of Wuppertal's 18th Gender Equality Award recognises to a high degree that a great deal of media attention is achieved in the social media with a small budget. For the jury, this is a great asset, as (future) students obtain a high proportion of their information from social media. This means that the stories about the female physicists are also told in the right place.
The prize money of 5,000 euros will be invested in an exhibition and a book publication by the project managers led by Dean's Officer and co-initiator Dr Isabella Kappner. In addition, a student assistant position is to be created in order to present even more female careers in physics.
