The Chair of Electrical Power Supply Technology opened its high-voltage hall on Friday, 3 October, as part of the WDR "Mouse Door Opener Day" campaign. More than 120 young and old mouse fans wanted to take a look inside the otherwise strictly closed laboratory.

It was shown how very high voltages can be generated and what the researchers at the University of Wuppertal then use them for. In one of the experiments, for example, it was shown how much voltage the insulator of a high-voltage line can withstand before it cracks.

The guests were particularly impressed by how the employees of the department were able to visualise electrical current using various methods. They used a thermal imaging camera, among other things. The discharge phenomena were also impressive.

The employees drew a positive conclusion: "We were able to present and communicate complex technical contexts in a child-friendly way and provide insights into our current research topics."
