From 24 November, specially designed sandwich bags in the cafeterias of the Studierendenwerk will draw attention to the still taboo everyday violence against women. The bags carry messages against violence against women as well as specific offers of help - multilingual and low-threshold.
The International Day against Violence against Women, which is celebrated annually on 25 November, is the occasion for numerous campaigns and events aimed at raising awareness of gender-specific violence against women and girls. The "sandwich bag campaign" carried out at over 30 universities in North Rhine-Westphalia is a cooperation project between the staff of the equal opportunities offices at NRW universities and is supported by the State Conference of Equal Opportunities Officers at Universities and University Hospitals in NRW (LaKof) and the student services organisations in North Rhine-Westphalia. A total of 113,000 bags will be handed out during the campaign period to raise awareness of the issue.
In keeping with Orange Day, the alternative name of the campaign day, the bags are designed in orange. They not only carry a clear message against violence against women, but also a reference to the "Violence against women" helpline, which can be reached in 14 languages by dialling 116 016. In addition, a graphic shows the hand sign established as a "silent call for help", in which an open palm is shown, in which the thumb is placed and enclosed with the remaining four fingers. A gesture with which those affected can draw attention to themselves.
In addition to the campaign in cooperation with the Studierendenwerke Nordrhein-Westfalen, LaKof will be holding a series of digital and hybrid lectures on the topic from 18 November to 6 December. More information can be found at https://lakofnrw.de/themen/orange-days-2025/
