Right-wing narratives - the role of the media in the climate discourse

08.01.2026|09:15 Uhr

Terms such as "eco-dictatorship" or "green elites" are increasingly characterising public discourse. Right-wing narratives specifically portray necessary climate protection as a threat to freedom - often reinforced by social media. How do these narratives influence social transformation? To discuss this question, the Centre for Transformation Research and Sustainability (transzent) at the University of Wuppertal and the Wuppertal Institute are inviting you to the CityKirche in Wuppertal for the second time in a row on 22 January 2026 at 6 pm. This time, the event "Democracy under pressure" is entitled "Right-wing narratives - the role of the media in the climate discourse".

In recent years, right-wing narratives have increasingly emerged in the public discourse on climate protection and transformation challenges. The media play a central role in the emergence and, above all, the rapid spread of these narratives. These include, in particular, social platforms on which actors from the right-wing spectrum can effectively place and mutually reinforce their messages. Against this backdrop, the event will explore the question of how such narratives emerge, who spreads them, how they influence public perception of climate change and thus also the willingness to consistently implement the necessary climate protection measures.

Participation is free of charge, but places are limited. Please register in advance.

After a welcome address by Prof Dr Birgitta Wolff, Rector of the University of Wuppertal, and a brief introduction to the topic by Prof Dr Manfred Fischedick, President and Scientific Director of the Wuppertal Institute, three keynote speeches will follow:

  • Dr Hauke Dannemann from Goethe University Frankfurt will talk about the emergence of right-wing narratives, about nationalist interpretations in environmental and climate policy and will discuss how authoritarian actors are undermining democratic models today.
  • Florian Teller from the Fachstelle Radikalisierungsprävention und Engagement im Naturschutz (FARN) explores the question of how extreme right-wing actors instrumentalise nature conservation and environmental protection for their own ideological purposes.
  • In her keynote speech, Louisa Pröschel from the University of Hamburg will examine the debates, particularly in social media, and analyse the extent to which a culture war is emerging here.

The speakers will then discuss the significance of right-wing narratives and media dynamics for the democratic shaping of an effective climate and transformation policy. Junior Professor Dr Karoline Augenstein from transzent will moderate the panel discussion.

Centre for Transformation Research and Sustainability (transzent)

The transzent is a competence centre at the University of Wuppertal, which was founded in 2013 in cooperation with the Wuppertal Institute. It builds a bridge from the university to practice by creating experimental spaces for socio-ecological transformation processes through transdisciplinary research. Its aim is to develop and test transformation solutions that enable a good life for all within planetary boundaries. In addition to research and knowledge transfer, the insights gained are also incorporated into university teaching in order to sensitise and empower students for the challenges of sustainability transformation. Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy gGmbH

The Wuppertal Institute is an implementation-orientated research institute with roots in North Rhine-Westphalia and a global horizon. Together with its stakeholders, the researchers shape transformation processes with the vision of creating a sustainable world for all. To this end, they develop science-based solutions for ecological, social and economic challenges: from concrete measures for cities and companies, the state, federal government and EU to impetus for international climate negotiations. The employees always have the big picture in mind and combine future knowledge from various research fields and subject areas. Further information: wupperinst.org
