The Ruhr Astroparticle and Plasma Physics (RAPP) Centre is celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2025. To mark the anniversary, the RAPP team is presenting its research in large format: as a planetarium show entitled "Our Exotic Universe".
The premiere for the media and invited school classes will take place on 8 October 2025 at 11.30 a.m. in the Bochum Planetarium (Castroper Str. 67, 44791 Bochum). Journalists are cordially invited. There will be an opportunity to ask the organisers of the show questions from 11 am. Coffee and cake will be provided. Please register in advance at julia.tjus[at]ruhr-uni-bochum.de. The show will be open to the public from 12 October 2025 (see further screenings below).
At the RAPP Centre, teams from Ruhr-Universität Bochum, the Technical University of Dortmund and the University of Duisburg-Essen, in cooperation with the University of Wuppertal, are investigating fundamental questions about the universe, including the origin of cosmic radiation, the nature of dark matter and the formation of magnetic fields in space.
The RAPP team has analysed the results of this research for a wide audience and produced the show "Our Exotic Universe" under the auspices of the Bochum Planetarium. Visitors embark on a fascinating journey of discovery to the extreme places of the cosmos. They find themselves in the midst of the remains of a stellar explosion, see galaxies glowing in radio light and experience how an entire star is torn apart at the edge of a massive black hole.
Further demonstrations - open to the public from 12 October
As part of the RAPP anniversary celebrations, the show will be shown again at the Bochum Planetarium on 8 October 2025 at 5.30 pm. Media representatives can also attend this event if they are interested. From 12 October 2025, the show will be shown to the public in the Bochum Planetarium. In 2026, screenings are also planned in planetariums in other cities in Germany and abroad.
The University of Wuppertal and the RAPP Centre
The origin and properties of cosmic rays are a central research topic of the Chair of Astroparticle Physics headed by Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Kampert. The team from Wuppertal thus complements the research spectrum of the RAPP partner universities in a special way. The collaboration between all participating universities takes place in particular in the special research area ‘Cosmic Interacting Matters – From Source to Signal’, funded by the German Research Foundation.
