Prof Dr Ruben-Laurids Lange is the new Professor of Urban Water Management at the University of Wuppertal. With his research, he aims to provide new impetus for sustainable, resource-conserving water infrastructure in cities and municipalities. The 43-year-old is returning to his alma mater, where he studied civil engineering.

His research is dedicated to central future issues of municipal water management. One focus is on the development of concepts that enable decentralised and sustainable treatment, infiltration and use of rainwater and wastewater in and on buildings and properties. "I want to develop solutions at the interface between buildings, land and public spaces that combine ecological and economic benefits," says Lange.

Another research interest is the removal of micropollutants such as pharmaceuticals or pesticides from municipal wastewater. During his time at the Emschergenossenschaft, Lange was already involved in projects for the elimination of trace substances. Against the backdrop of the EU Municipal Wastewater Directive, which will be adopted in 2024 and provides for extended purification stages at wastewater treatment plants, he would like to investigate the economic efficiency and limits of various processes in future - preferably in cooperation with regional partners such as the Wupper Association.
