Inspired by the personal experiences of screenwriter Petra Volpe and directed by Barbara Kulcsar, "The Golden Years" is dedicated to the challenges and opportunities of life after retirement.

Director Barbara Kulcsar describes her film as follows: "DIE GOLDENENEN JAHRE essentially tells a universal love story. The questions about their shared life plans and ideas ultimately culminate in the question of how love can still work after many years of marriage. When they retire, our protagonists Alice and Peter realise that the usual patterns no longer work. Alice is convinced that the way she imagines this new phase of her life also applies to Peter. But Peter suddenly doesn't go along as before. They both have to face the world with a new openness in order to find out how they want to live their golden years. They realise that it is never too late to take control of your life. And they manage to let go of each other without losing their love for one another."
