Police in a field of tension

Police violence, violence against the police - two sides of a complex problem. On 2 June, experts will discuss experiences, perceptions and solutions relating to violence in everyday police work at the Kunsthalle Barmen. The event will be moderated by Dr Tim Lukas from the Department of Civil Protection, Disaster Relief and Property Security at the University of Wuppertal.

The police are the bearers of the state's monopoly on the use of force. At the same time, statistics indicate an increase in acts of violence against police officers. How do police officers experience violence in their everyday work? What effect do police measures have on those affected? And what prevention approaches are there? This is the focus of the panel discussion "Between everyday life, violence and responsibility - police in the field of tension".

After a keynote speech on the results of the current police study "Motivation, attitudes and violence in the everyday life of police officers (MEGAVO)", experts from the police and academia will discuss challenges and perspectives in the area of tension between police violence and violence against the police.

Participants are Dr Svenja Keitzel (urban geographer, City of Frankfurt/M.), Andre Niewöhner (prevention network #sicherimDienst) and Dr Jochen Wittenberg (German Police University).

How police checks are experienced in open drug scenes can be seen in an accompanying exhibition at the Haus der Jugend in the Kunsthalle Barmen. The exhibition "[Surviving] life in a risky environment" provides an insight into the reality of life in the drug scene on Cologne's Neumarkt.
