Fireworks ban at the University of Wuppertal on New Year's Eve

Due to current construction work on the Grifflenberg campus, pyrotechnics are once again banned at the University of Wuppertal on New Year's Eve in coordination with the Wuppertal fire brigade. This should not dampen the festive mood: Anyone out and about on the university campus at the turn of the year can enjoy the view of the fireworks in the valley.

"After we were unfortunate enough to discover damage to buildings at the turn of the year 2023/24 due to the use of pyrotechnics, we decided to introduce a ban for the first time last year, which proved to be a success," explains Christian Schmersal, Head of Services in Infrastructural Facility Management at the University of Wuppertal.

Due to the current construction work, buildings G, U and X are completely wrapped in foil. Misdirected New Year's Eve rockets could cause major damage or even lead to a fire. "We don't want to take that risk this year either," emphasises Schmersal.

The ban explicitly refers to bringing and setting off fireworks of all kinds. Compliance will be monitored by the security service on New Year's Eve. It is still permitted to stay on site to welcome in the New Year together.
