Through the lens of Kurt Keil: Revisiting sports photography
Excerpt from the event poster: The new exhibition in the "Through the lens of Kurt Keil: Revisiting..." series focuses on the sports photography of the Wuppertal photographer // Photo collage Universitätsarchiv Wuppertal
Between the 1960s and 1990s, sport played an important role in Wuppertal's local press. The Westdeutsche Zeitung in particular was a central medium for sports reporting. In addition to traditional match reports, it also published photographic reports and background stories documenting the city's sporting life. Kurt Keil's particular passion was sports photography: he captured numerous Wuppertaler SV matches and unique visits by prominent athletes.
Kurt Keil shaped the visual image of sport in Wuppertal
From the opening of the Uni-Halle in 1987 with a tennis tournament attended by Steffi Graf and personalities such as coach Ion Țiriac, to visits from football stars such as Günther Netzer and international guests such as Californian Mark Spitz for the inauguration of the swimming opera in 1981 - they were all captured through Kurt Keil's lens for the Westdeutsche Zeitung. As a result, his pictures shaped the visual image of sport in the local press and the historical image of Wuppertal's sporting culture for decades.
Over a period of almost 50 years, the late press photographer Kurt Keil (1940-2020) photographed events in Wuppertal. The resulting collection now comprises more than 500,000 negatives as well as countless prints and newspaper cuttings. The pictures show both special events and everyday scenes from Wuppertal's city history. In 2021, Keil's estate was transferred to the Wuppertal University Archive.
The estate is the subject of courses
Students at the University of Wuppertal have been studying the estate since the winter semester 2023/24. In various courses, they learn how to make such extensive material accessible in a practice-oriented way - from initial viewing, cataloguing and archiving to curating exhibitions. The aim is to familiarise students with archive work and especially with working with and researching photographic material.
The exhibition
"Revisiting Sports Photography" is the third exhibition in the series "Through the Lens of Kurt Keil. Revisiting...". The first time Keil's photographs of Johannes Rau were shown, the second time it was about the suspension railway. Each exhibition presents pictures that Keil himself selected in 1992 to show to the public at the Sparkasse Wuppertal. The photos on display are now being rearranged and presented from a new perspective - they are being revisited.
"Through the Lens of Kurt Keil: Revisiting Sports Photography" can be seen from 15 April to 7 May 2026 in the foyer (BZ.07) of the University Library (Gaußstraße 20, 42119 Wuppertal). Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 8 am to 10 pm, Saturday and Sunday 10 am to 7 pm. Admission is free.
The exhibition was curated by the students Aida Memic, Tim Grünewald, Barbara Brandau, Jan Emmerich and Pia Stoffels - under the direction of Dr Carmen Pérez González.
About Kurt Keil
Born in 1940 in what is now the Czech Republic, Kurt Keil moved to the Ruhr region with his family in 1949. From 1963, he initially worked as a freelance photographer for the Ruhr Nachrichten and the (now) Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung. Four years later, he accepted the offer of a permanent position from the Westdeutsche Zeitung and moved to Wuppertal-Vohwinkel.
From then on, he documented daily events in Wuppertal. Taking pictures of people was one of Kurt Keil's particular strengths. Kurt Keil even managed to get the camera-shy Pina Bausch (1940-2009) in front of his lens several times.
Kurt Keil died in Wuppertal in 2020. After the basement of the Keil family home was flooded during the 2021 floods, his photographic collection ended up in the University archives.
