Students from Switzerland and the Netherlands spent a week working on BUGA 2031 together with their fellow Wuppertal students from the road traffic planning department. Specifically, they focussed on the Vohwinkel district of Wuppertal, including the areas of Kaiserstraße, Vohwinkeler Straße and Bahnstraße, and collected fresh ideas for the use and redesign of the traffic and urban development environment.

The University of Wuppertal's Department of road traffic planning & engineering, together with Bern University of Applied Sciences, Breda University of Applied Sciences and Windesheim University of Applied Sciences, hosted the event from 18 May to 23 May.

As part of the international workshop, the students developed ideas for transport planning for the "Bundegartenschau 2031" (BUGA) in Wuppertal. The focus of the considerations was on the traffic development of the planned core area "Tesche" in Wuppertal-Vohwinkel. The students developed ideas for redesigning the central area of Kaiserstraße, Vohwinkeler Straße and Bahnstraße, including the subway to Wuppertal-Vohwinkel railway station, and presented them in corresponding planning documents.

The ideas centre on increasing the attractiveness of the area under investigation in terms of a positive visitor experience, involving local civic engagement and, in terms of sustainability, considering opportunities that will serve the further development of Vohwinkel beyond BUGA 2031. In addition, adjustments to the planning of local public transport and approaches to establishing a BUGA app were developed to simplify traffic management during the "Bundesgartenschau 2031".

At the end of the week, the students presented the ideas developed during the week to employees of BUGA gGmbH and the city of Wuppertal at the Haspel campus of the university of Wuppertal. The latter announced that the results of the presentation would be taken into account in the development of BUGA 2031.
