DO WORRY BE HAPPY

Current exhibition at the Kunsthalle Barmen ends with three event highlights

11.08.2025|11:40 Uhr

The exhibition DO WORRY BE HAPPY can be seen at the Kunsthalle Barmen until 31 August. In addition to the artistic works, which deal with social fears, the Kunsthalle invites you to join in a dialogue, exchange ideas and celebrate together on three further dates.

The current exhibition in the Kunsthalle Barmen can be seen until 31 August.

The event will kick off on Wednesday, 20 August at 6 p.m. with the panel discussion "Interfering or mixing it up - forms of protest in politics and art". Together with the artists Pink Büchsenschütz and Jody Korbach, who are represented in the current exhibition with impressive works, the Member of the Bundestag Helge Lindh and Dr Christoph Rodatz, Junior Professor of Public Interest Design at the university of Wuppertal, will discuss the topic. The panel will explore the question of how artistic and political forms of protest can meet, learn from each other - or even rub up against each other.

The panel discussion "Who owns the city? - Gentrification (not) an issue in Wuppertal" will follow on Thursday, 28 August at 5.30 pm and will deal with one of the central urban anxiety topics of our time. Experts from urban development, neighbourhood work and civil society engagement will discuss how urban change affects social structures - including in Wuppertal. The panel will be organised and moderated by Wuppertal educational scientist Prof. Dr. Fabian Kessl and will include Anja Bierwirth (Wuppertal Institute, Urban Change), Christian Hampe (Forum:Mirke), Thomas Helbig (ISG Barmen e.V.) and Salissou Oumarou (JMD im Quartier, Wichlinghausen).

The end of the exhibition will be celebrated on Sunday, 31 August, with a summer party and the finissage of DO WORRY BE HAPPY. From 2 p.m., the Kunsthalle Barmen and Geschwister-Scholl-Platz will be transformed into a lively stage for outdoor lectures, workshops, performances, dance, demonstrations, music and communal dining. The exhibition does not end quietly - but loudly, diversely and with a collective look ahead: the next exhibition "Ex Nihilo" is already in the starting blocks and will open on 17 October.

Admission to all events is free.

Podium architecture on the forecourt

The organisers, led by Wuppertal art professor Katja Pfeiffer, would like to express their special thanks to the Wuppertal companies Knipex and KARL DEUTSCH Prüf- und Messgerätebau GmbH + Co KG, who supported the exhibition with a generous donation of pallets.

The pallets supplied were used to create a changeable podium architecture on Geschwister-Scholl-Platz in front of the Kunsthalle, where numerous programme items of the exhibition will take place. The design of the square as an open space for discourse is also complemented by plant boxes and perennials, which were provided as part of a cooperation with BUGA 2031 gGmbH. Together, these contributions create an inviting, green stage for dialogue, performance and encounters in public space - in keeping with the exhibition's purpose.

About the Kunsthalle Barmen

The Kunsthalle Barmen in the Haus der Jugend, which will reopen in 2024, will be used for three exhibitions a year for three years under the sponsorship of the university of Wuppertal - funded by the Landschaftsverband Rheinland and the city of Wuppertal.

The current exhibition was preceded by the exhibitions "Shared Spaces" and "Fertile Structures" since its launch in October last year. Each aimed to create exciting encounters between art, teaching, science and, above all, active encounters with the neighbourhood and urban society.
