Teaching within Europe with Erasmus+

As part of the "Mobility for Lecturers" programme, lecturers at the University of Wuppertal can complete short teaching periods abroad in Europe and receive Erasmus+ funding for this.

The most important facts in brief

Funding for the mobility of teachers at an Erasmus+ partner university

Duration: 2-60 consecutive days (funding usually for 7 days, in justified exceptional cases max. 14 days possible due to limited budget)

Duties of 8 teaching hours per week

Erasmus+ funding: fixed unit costs (lump sums) for travel and accommodation costs

Participants learn first-hand about the workings of another European education system and at the same time strengthen the European dimension of the host university through their stay. Through the exchange with colleagues, they can optimise their own teaching methods and content and impart their specialist knowledge to students who may not be able to study abroad themselves.

Possible target countries are basically

  • the EU member states: Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Hungary, Cyprus
  • the programme countries Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Turkey
  • Overseas territories: Although Erasmus+ funding in overseas countries and territories is in line with the programme, it is subject to the rules of the programme and the agreements applicable to its member state. Example: For funding to Curação, the funding rate for the Netherlands applies.

Important: A teaching period funded by the Erasmus+ programme can only be completed at a partner university of the University of Wuppertal.
The partner universities with which the University of Wuppertal has contractually agreed Erasmus+ teaching visits can be found here.

Grants for mobility for teaching purposes can be awarded to the following employees who work at the University of Wuppertal (the main place of residence must not be in the destination country):

  • Lecturers who have a contractual relationship with the University of Wuppertal
  • Lecturers without endowment
  • Visiting lecturers
  • Emeritus professors / retired lecturers
  • Research assistants

  • Erasmus+ funding for teaching stays is possible for a period of 2-60 consecutive days. Mobility for teaching purposes requires a teaching load of 8 teaching hours per week. Beyond one week (5 working days or 7 calendar days), the required teaching load is calculated as follows: 8 hours/5 days x number of additional days.
  • If the teaching activity is combined with an Erasmus+ mobility for further education and training, the teaching load is reduced to 4 hours/week.

  • there is an Erasmus+ cooperation agreement between the University of Wuppertal and the host university in which mobility for teaching purposes has been agreed
  • the mobility has been discussed with the faculty/institute
  • the mobility has been discussed with the partner university and you have received an invitation

Erasmus+ funding

Participants receive fixed unit costs (lump sums) for travel and accommodation costs from Erasmus+ funds.

The Erasmus+ mobility grant is paid out in two instalments. Participants receive 80% of the mobility grant at the beginning of their stay abroad. Once the documents to be submitted at the end (after the mobility) have been submitted on time, the remaining 20% of the mobility grant will be paid out.

The unit costs are made up of travel and subsistence allowances and are calculated as follows:

Travelling expenses

The distance is calculated solely using the EU Commission's Distance Calculator.

Single distance according to distance calculator Standard journey Green Travel
10 - 99 km 28 Euro 56 Euro
100 - 499 km 211 Euro 285 EUR
500 - 1,999 km 309 EUR 417 EUR
