Further DFG funding for the "Rhodomanologia" edition project

Lorenz Rhodoman (1545-1606) worked as a school headmaster and professor in central and northern Germany. Due to his Greek poems, some of which are very extensive and mainly deal with theological and mythical themes, he was praised by his contemporaries as a "second Homer".
While the poems up to 1588 are being edited in the current first half of the project, the second half, which has now been secured through further funding, is dedicated to the poems from 1589 until his death at the beginning of 1606. Rhodoman's correspondence and some of his speeches will also be included.
The edition is available on the website www.rhodomanologia.de. The new funding period is expected to begin in early 2026.
The Wuppertal researchers involved in the joint project are Dr Stefan Weise, Junior Professor of Classics/Greek, as well as Prof Dr Patrick Sahle and Dr Jennifer Bunselmeier from the Digital Humanities department. Classical philologist Prof Dr Thomas Gärtner from the University of Osnabrück is involved in the project.
More background: Digital editions
Scholarly editions are a staple of the philological disciplines, but also of the historical sciences. The principles of editing have changed considerably over the course of time. The switch to the digital medium has expanded the possibilities for accessing sources in many ways: users can, for example, choose a completely individualised approach to an edition, guided by their research interests, through a variety of display and search settings.
In the case of "Rhodomanologia", a digital edition of all available poems by Lorenz Rhodoman is being created. In addition to Rhodoman's text, the edition includes a German translation (in the case of Greek-Latin poems, only of the Greek text) and a comprehensive apparatus with detailed explanations, for example on the genesis and transmission of the works.
The complete edition and the individual editions can also be downloaded as a searchable PDF version in addition to the online display.
