SommerUni: More than 200 participants get a taste of STEM

Full house at the SommerUni: Every year, the project welcomes young women to the University of Wuppertal to show them what it's all about: Natural and technical science degree programmes are something for everyone! // Photo Friederike von Heyden
The number of registrations was once again well over 200, with participants coming from all over the Bergisches Land region, from North Rhine-Westphalia - and occasionally even from Bavaria and Hesse. The SummerUni week kicked off with an inspiring talk by food chemist Prof Julia Bornhorst, in which she gave personal insights into her journey from choosing a course of study to becoming a professor.
"What was particularly nice for the entire organisation team was that one student described the week as a 'booster' - full of encouraging encounters and diverse insights into the STEM subjects at the University of Wuppertal," reports project manager Ursula Skraburski.
This year, the Open Faculty Day of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Information Technology and Media Technology was part of the SummerUni programme for the first time - an internal cooperation that also proved to be a complete success: almost half of the participants used 1 July to find out about electrical engineering, information technology and media technology in a fun and practical way.
"As always, special thanks go to the team of tutors, who guided the participants through the week with great commitment, expertise and on an equal footing - whether in laboratory experiments or on the STEM course," says Skraburski. Other students also provided active support with the organisation.
The next date has already been set: next year in 2026, the SummerUni will take place from 6 to 10 July.
