By signing the cooperation agreement, the two institutions are reaffirming their joint commitment to recognising young talent at an early stage and providing targeted support. Prof. Dr Susanne Buch, vice-rector for studies and teaching, Dr Christine Hummel, head of the central student guidance and counselling services at the university of Wuppertal, talent scout Zerrin Kücük as well as headmistress Antje Häusler and Simone Schwachenwalde, responsible for career guidance at upper secondary level, took part in the signing ceremony. The cooperation will provide pupils at Velbert-Mitte comprehensive school with an extended range of support services in the transition from school to university and career.

About the talent scouting programme of the central student guidance and counselling services

Since 2017, the University of Wuppertal has been supporting around 900 pupils at 36 partner schools (further education colleges, vocational colleges, comprehensive schools, grammar schools) in the Bergisch city-triangle and the district of Mettmann with six talent scouts. The 'Talent Scouting' department is institutionally located in the BUW's central student guidance and counselling services. A core element of the work area is the 'Wupper Scholarships' school scholarship programme, which is financed exclusively by donations.

NRW Talent Scouting is one of the largest programmes for more equal opportunities in Germany. What began in 2011 at a single university with talent scout pioneer Suat Yilmaz has now expanded to 27 universities throughout the state since 2015 thanks to the support of the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of Science. Looking back, a total of 30,000 talents have already been individually supported on their educational path by the now 100 certified talent scouts.

The aim of talent scouting is to ensure that committed pupils with no previous academic background are accompanied by a talent scout from the time they enter upper secondary school through to their transition to vocational training or university and into a career.
