We are shaping the future - together and with equal opportunities: the University of Wuppertal has adopted its new Gender Equality Concept 2030. It sets out the guidelines for the next five years and strengthens equality as a driver of university development.

On 8 July 2025, the Rectorate of the University of Wuppertal adopted the new Gender Equality Concept 2030. The fully laid out version is now available as a PDF download. The concept forms the strategic framework for gender equality work over the next five years and at the same time stands for the university policy goal of further strengthening equal opportunities as a quality feature in research, teaching, transfer and university operations.

The Gender Equality Strategy 2030 sets new standards: it combines gender equality policy management with data-based monitoring and sustainably developed measures. It addresses the entire academic qualification chain - from the choice of degree programme to the doctoral phase and appointment to professorships - and places a special focus on transitions where structural inequalities become visible. The further development of governance structures and the strengthening of equal opportunities work in the faculties are also among the concept's innovations. The university relies on close cooperation at all levels - supported by central and decentralised actors, anchored in governance, personnel development and culture.

At the same time, the concept serves as official application to the 2030 female professors programme of the federal and state governments. The aim of the programme is to structurally anchor gender equality in science, academia and research and to sustainably increase the proportion of female professors at German universities. The university can look back on three successful funding periods with funding commitments totalling around 3.7 million euros.

"With the new gender equality concept, we are systematically shaping the conditions for equal opportunities in academic careers," emphasises Rector Prof. Dr Birgitta Wolff. "This is not just about numbers, but about conviction: Gender equality is a shared task - and a driver of institutional development that advances our university as a whole."
