How can I learn German?

Learn German for study and work

The Language Teaching Institute of the University of Wuppertal offers courses in German as a foreign language at levels A1 to C1, including DSH preparation. The combination of A1 and A2 is provided as a digital self-learning module for absolute beginners.

The preparatory German courses are aimed at international prospective students who have applied to study at the University of Wuppertal and do not yet have the German language skills required to begin their studies.

Prospective students with foreign educational certificates apply to the university via the uni-assist service point. Application information is available in German and English on the website of the student admission and registration for international students ("Internationales Studierendensekretariat").

Application deadlines

  •     for the winter semester (beginning in October): 15 May to 15 July
  •     for the summer semester (beginning in April): 15 November to 15 January

In order to apply for the preparatory German course, you must prepare an application for the degree programme you wish to study at the University of Wuppertal in My uni-assist, indicating the degree programme you wish to study after the German course or the DSH examination. Answer "Yes" to the question "Do you apply for admission to a study-preparatory German course".

If you are admitted, the result of a placement test will determine your assignment to a course level.

A cost contribution of 500,00 EUR per semester is payable for participation. Prospective students with a refugee background can apply to the International Center for the cost contribution to be covered from In Touch project funds. The prerequisite for this is a current residence title that identifies you as a refugee and that your entry to Germany on the day of application was less than 5 years ago. The application form is available on request by email to intouch[at]uni-wuppertal.de.

Tandem is a form of language learning in which learners with different mother tongues sit together to teach each other their respective languages.

You are not bound to courses or curricula. The tandem is organised and run by you independently. For example, you can practise speaking German in an informal atmosphere and, in the best case, make new friends.

We will be happy to help you find a suitable tandem partnership! Please fill out the registration form and send it to: audio{[at]}uni-wuppertal.de

You can find more information about our tandem programmes on the Website of the Language Learning Institute (SLI).
