As well as teaching and research, the transfer of academic, scientific and technological knowledge between the university and society at large has always been regarded as a fundamental task of the German universities. UW's Knowledge Transfer Office focuses mainly on cooperations with industry, both in the acquisition and management of research commissions and in organizing work placements and internships.
The office also handles patent applications from UW faculty – in cooperation with the North Rhine-Westphalian patents agency PROvendis.
A further task of the Knowledge Transfer Office is planning and management of large-scale university events such as Research Day or Open Day, as well as designing and organizing UW stands at trade fairs and other similar venues. Finally the office manages bizeps, the young entrepreneurs' business startup program, as well as school contacts and UNImarketing (the UW marketing office).
